WHAT IS AN ISOLATION TRANSFORMER?
An isolation transformer is a device used to isolate one electrical installation from another. This prevents a problem on a temporary installation from creating a problem on the main site. In this article, we tell you a little more about the operation and possible uses of an isolation transformer.
WHAT ARE THE USES OF AN ISOLATION TRANSFORMER?
Isolation transformers are used in a wide variety of fields, particularly on sites with a large number of devices. One common application is in the IT sector. For example, if a personal computer malfunctions, the isolation transformer protects the rest of the electrical system. This is a particularly popular installation in this field, because of the risk of data loss due to power cuts.
Computer data is precious, but human life is even more so. That's why isolation transformers are widely used in hospitals. There's no question of letting a poorly insulated device endanger the lives of hundreds of patients, especially if they're on respiratory assistance or on the operating table!
HOW TO CHOOSE AN ISOLATION TRANSFORMER?
To choose the right isolation transformer, you need to know your electrical power requirements by adding up all the wattages of your appliances. Ideally, add a margin of 140%. This gives you the VA power you need. This enables you to choose a transformer that will be able to cope with peaks in consumption without overheating or breaking down. Other criteria should also be taken into account:
- What is the mains voltage?
- What is the frequency of the source?
- Or how often is electrical equipment used?
- And last but not least (obviously) the price to suit your budget.
If you're working in a harsh environment, take into account the protection rating (IP). For outdoor use, it's important to choose a transformer that can withstand rain, water and dust.
OUR TWO MODELS OF ISOLATION TRANSFORMERS
At Labérine, we offer safety transformers and isolation/separation transformers for professionals. In the case of isolation transformers transformers, we offer 2 models: the 400/400 V mobile transformer and the mobile transformer 230/230 V.
This allows you to isolate an electrical installation while on the move. Its IP54 protection rating guarantees a transformer transformer, even in inclement weather and dust. Its use is therefore particularly recommended on large construction sites.
For high-power applications, Labérine recommends you opt for the 400/400V isolation transformer. Tropicalized, this transformer enables you to operate in particularly hot and humid areas. Larger and heavier than 230V transformers, 400V models models enable you to supply jobsites with power requirements in excess of 3,500 VA. With its IP21-certified sheet metal casing, this transformer can withstand water droplets up to 15° from the vertical.
